Mary Croghan Summer Scholarship Program

Mary Croghan was a beloved RAFA member who donated her flute to our organization. For several years, her flute was utilized in a scholarship loan program to assist student flutists who did not have access to a professional instrument. In 2023, RAFA decided to sell the flute. With proceeds from the sale, the RAFA board hopes to help many more young flutists continue their education — something we know Mary would be proud of!

Amount: $500. One scholarship will be awarded each year.

Eligibility: Students (rising high school through graduate school). Must be an active RAFA member.

Purpose: To assist flutists in attending a summer music camp, a summer music festival, or the National Flute Association annual convention.

Deadline: All materials are due by 11:59 p.m. on April 1 via the electronic submission form below. Materials will be reviewed by a committee of RAFA members. The scholarship recipient will be announced no later than May 1.

Application materials

  • A personal statement describing how you would use the award and how this would benefit your flute education.
  • Letters of recommendation from:
    • Your private lesson teacher (or band director if you do not have a private teacher)
    • An adult non-family member (can be another teacher)

Additional requirements

  • The scholarship recipient will write an article for the RAFA Tune In newsletter about their experience at the summer event the scholarship helped to fund. The article will be submitted for publication no later than November 1 of the year in which the scholarship award is paid.
  • Creating a social media post, together with an image, for RAFA to publish would be appreciated but is not required.
  • There is no need to be accepted to a summer program before applying for this scholarship. However, if you are awarded the scholarship, RAFA will release the funds only with proof of acceptance to a summer program or with proof of registration for the NFA convention. If these conditions are not met, the scholarship can be deferred for a maximum of one year from the date it is awarded.
