Practical Matters: mind, body, and spirit with Flute4

Co-sponsored by RAFA and Duke University Music Department, the afternoon features a recital by Flute4 and participatory workshops on a variety of Practical Matters including ensemble skills, musicians’ health, mind-games, & teamwork.

Review and Contest (35th annual)

Sunday, November 3, 2019
1:30 – 5:30 PM

Scholarship competition for local flutists of all ages. Contest winners will perform at the Flute Fair on Saturday, November 9.

RAFA Artist Competition (5th annual)

Friday-Saturday, November 8-9, 2019

National-level competition for advanced flutists age 17 and above; $1750 in prizes. Details at www.rafaflutes.org. Friday evening’s semi-final round is open to the public. Final round will be held during Saturday’s Flute Fair (Nov. 9).

RAFA Flute Fair (31st annual) with guest artist Valerie Coleman

Saturday, November 9, 2019
8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

The day’s events include a class and concert by guest artist Valerie Coleman (flutist, composer, founder of Grammy-nominated Imani Winds); exhibits of the latest flutes and accessories; Student Showcase recitals featuring RAFA Contest winners; participatory workshops; recital by 2018 Artist Competition winner Jovana Damnjanović; and the final round of the 2019 Artist Competition!

Flute Choir Day with guest clinician Paige Dashner Long

Sunday, February 23, 2020
1:00 – 6:00 PM

Paige Dashner Long (flute choir conductor, clinician, and low flutes expert) will lead coaching sessions for RAFA’s flute choirs, as well as an open flute choir rehearsal and performance of a large ensemble composition.

Solo/Ensemble Fest (16th annual)

April 2020 (date TBD)

Graded repertoire examinations for all ages; participants can choose to enter the solo and/or ensemble category.

RAFA offers five flute choirs in the Triangle:
Silver Fantasy (advanced level in Raleigh)
Silver Pipes (intermediate level in Raleigh)
Silver Winds (multi-level in Raleigh)
Flute Cocktail (multi-level in Chapel Hill)
Durham Flute Choir (multi-level in Durham)
